Recently, the hubby and I went to see American Hustle in my opinion, to say it was a good movie would be an understatement.
I was particularly fascinated with the set design of the movie, I thought they depicted a great image of the 1970′s in New York City, or what I have heard it is like. There was something particularly glamorous about this movie and I will be first (and probably not the only) to say, sadly it wasn’t Christian Bale’s body in this film. However is acting was superb as always, that never fails.
The first set I would like to talk about is the one for the Plaza Hotel, it was a feast for my hearty design eyes! I adored the flocked wallpaper, they really layered on all the goods in this room. Tassels upon tassels, gold, sparkles, patterns and stripes… you name it and it’s pretty much in this room.

Moving on to some of the personal spaces of the characters, first we have got to talk about The Rosenfeld’s house. This looks like a 1970′s ranch house time capsule if you ask me! I personally love the octagonal shaped lounge chairs, I would surely use them in an interior today. Keep them in burnt orange? Maybe? I would have to update the surrounding a bit for a current day installation. And isn’t it so strange how similar that wallpaper looks to the wallpaper I used (ironically paired with a flocked wallpaper) in the Hollywood Regency style residence I did? Just in a different color way! Take a look…

Then we have their bedroom, can you say gold, brocade and more gold? Jennifer Lawrence’s character seems to be quite the handful and I think it’s clear that she likes her bedroom decor to match. I love that they threw in the old work out bike too.

Amy Adam’s character Sydney has a bit of a more modern character in the movie and her apartment plays just the part. Jolts of color and simple furniture. Her bedroom was this bold yellow:

Monochromatic, parquet floors and simple, this seems like it would be the perfect apartment for every single girl in Manhattan in the 1970s.

And let’s just talk about these grasscloth walls. Grasscloth is such a timeless way to add texture to the interior, I have to say I am smitten over the look of this apartment.
Okay, do you really think we could talk about this movie without talking about the fashion? The amazing sexy fashion? Big glasses, daringly low neck lines, fur, slinky dresses even with the tan lines I’ll take it…
I don’t know about you, but after watching the movie and having Electric Light Orchestra’s “10538 Overture” play over and over in my head, I wanted to go home, throw my hair in hot rollers go out and dance my face off. I only hope that no one decides to bring back the macrame bathing suits, please let’s keep those in the 70′s.
So what was your thoughts on the movie? Love it? hate it? Did you live in NYC at this time, was it a true depiction of the era? Do tell!
